Team player

Throughout the years, I’ve enjoyed watching my incredible Azure UX team grow from 10 to over 200 amazing individuals.

During the early days, I acted as the impromptu “team spirit cheerleader” fostering camaraderie and running jokes by setting up theme parties, conference trips, and other shenanigans.

Orchestrator of organized chaos

During my many visits to Burning Man, I’ve been part of large theme camps and intimate groups alike. My favorite experiences have involved orchestrating groups of newbies to challenge themselves and overcome their fears so that they can have the experience of a lifetime. Witnessing them blossom through their self actualizing journeys is priceless beyond measure.

From early informational and camp planning meetings through the countless hours of work parties, transport logistics, camp coordination, and the rigors of radical self-reliance in the desert, I enjoyed maintaining an atmosphere of playful collaboration.

Creative communicator

If you’re going to give a talk, it may as well be memorable and entertaining … like this spooky Halloween talk given to the Boulder UX Research group @ Galvanize 🎃

Taking numerous pages from Joseph Campbell, my personal philosophy is that life is indeed our own unique hero’s journey. This can take many forms, one being exploring the unknown. I’ve lived in squats in Amsterdam and lodged with monks on sacred mountains high above Japan. Every experience broadens our view of the world and our empathy for the beings in it.

Ethnographic observer

In 2014, my partner and I decided to take our lives and our tech jobs on the road to explore a life of adventure while learning about cultures and ways of life way-beyond our former bubble.

For many months we lived off of our motorbikes in the high mountains and islands of Southeast Asia.

For 1 1/2 years we lived in a motorhome while circling Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand.

When returning to North America, we lived briefly in Hawaii, then in Silicon Valley, Newfoundland and many places in between.

Startups

Nothing is quite as invigorating as polishing off that… one…  last… bit at 5:30 am in a house full of excited team members gearing up for the next day’s accelerator demo. During these startup experiences I really enjoyed wearing ALL THE HATS, while working in a fast paced, no structure environment. 🙂

Future of design

I envision a future of design moving rapidly away from siloed apps and services that force users to hop from one set of overlapping features to another in order to perform tasks in a linear fashion.

The human mind is an interconnected mesh that responds instantly and proffers relevant connections gained through experiential learning. For software to truly aid creativity and empower our life’s work, it must offer the same natural experience in an elastic yet logical ecosystem where users can compose their own technology experience stack that suits their specific needs and workflow.
